Due to the high weight of steel or aluminum strip, only certain storage techniques are suitable. The strip is coiled into so-called coils during production, the round shape resulting therefrom also makes coil storage more difficult. Due to the high weights and the round shape, a Coil stock therefore provides a special danger potential, which can only be realized with suitable storage possibilities.
Coil Stock Organization
Coils are often used as so-called bulk storage or line storage. This kind of storage organization is a kind of the ground storage whereby the coils as the name it says directly on the ground are stored. Practically, lines are formed in order to be able to remove the individual coils. In order to increase the surface utilization, it is recommended to stack the individual coils. An advantage of the ground storage is the low acquisition costs which must be invested for storage facilities. A disadvantage of the ground storage is that only the LIFO principle (last in, first out) is possible without problems. The ground storage also has a higher surface area than the shelf stock.
A further storage technology is carried out as a previously mentioned shelf stock. In doing so, the individual coils are laid or hung in shelves. The disadvantages of this type of organization are the high investment costs and the low load-bearing capacity of the shelf systems. As an advantage, a relatively good utilization of the area can be called for certain types of use, especially since it is possible in this case to be able to remove each individual coil separately.
Storage techniques in the coil storage
The various storage techniques vary greatly and are mainly oriented on the products to be stored. A main distinction can be made with the storage of coils, middle band and slit band. A distinction must be made in which spatial orientation the band plate is stored either horizontally (lying) with the coil eye or vertical (standing) with the eye. This means that large coils and middle band are often stored in a horizontal position, as is the case with our Big-Coil-Stock. In some cases, however, the middle band is also placed on pallets in the ground storage.
In the slit band, one finds a special situation, because of the narrow width, these products are subject to tilting in a horizontal bearing. Therefore, slit band is often stored standing on a pallet. Here, again, the disadvantages of this storage form are to be found, since the slit band has to be brought back into the lying position for further processing. For this reason, a horizontal bearing has increasingly been used, as is the case with our SM-Coil-Stock in order to eliminate these and other disadvantages.
